Silver Ships Commissions Tow Vessel for Tow Boat U.S. Long Beach
Silver Ships recently teamed up with Alamitos Bay Marine and Tow Boat U.S. to commission a tow vessel in Long Beach, California.
The tow boat, an Ambar 800 series vessel, is the latest addition to Silver Ships’ workboat commissions. The boat was constructed to fulfill Alamitos Bay Marine’s need for a faster boat that could help extend the range of run distance and towing capabilities. Equipped with a heavy-duty towing post and cleats, the vessel is used to help keep boaters in Long Beach safe and free from the stress of potential breakdown. While the boat’s main mission is focused on towing, it will also assist in additional missions such as dewatering flooded boats.
Ambar series vessels, part of the Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) family, were originally designed to meet the demands of the North Sea as rescue boats and have been used in many applications from fire and rescue service to patrol and research missions.
The 28-foot-10-inch boat, which is Alamitos Bay Marine’s first RHIB, was designed for security and stability. Features include twin 300hp Suzuki Outboards, Wing Inflatables collars, a Simrad Yachting navigation system and shock mitigating Ullman dynamics seats. The 9-foot-4-inch beam and deep-V ocean-going hull form keep the boat steady and riding smoothly in trying conditions.
Long Beach’s newest tow boat is already hard at work. The second tow with the commissioned vessel was a 22-hour run in stringent conditions, including five to eight-foot seas and 25kt winds. The harsh weather was no match for the resilient vessel, which kept operators safe and dry as they rode 96 miles offshore in the 180-mile round trip, a franchise record.
